Health and Well-being for Caregivers

How often has someone asked about the family member who is being cared for? You have answered and those well wishers have continued to offer support for your ailing, aging or disabled loved one. It is seldom that they actually realize you as the caregiver need and want continued support. Your emotional support and encouragement is what New Beginnings is all about. When you as the caregiver feel support, assistance and warmth, it is easier for you to carry on with your caregiving responsibilities. It is motivating to know that others are considering your thoughts and feelings. How often are you taking time out for yourself — just a few minutes a day to unwind? When is the last time that you as the caregiver decided you deserved a real break? It’s not too late to plan that summer get-away. Call in some favors. Being a caregiver requires flexibility in your schedule to allow you to realize that someone really wants to know and cares about you.

Acknowledge Yourself As Caregiver

Acknowledging yourself as a caregiver is on my list of the top secrets to caregiving. Often caregivers fail to appreciate themselves for all the caring and compassion they demonstrate while caring for their loved one. Acknowledging your services and support can garner more aid in your day-to day efforts. Someone may be listening and volunteer to assist you on this journey. That assistance may come in the form of resources to comfort you or your loved one. A helping hand with some of the routine responsibilities can also be a result of your acknowledging your concerns as a caregiver for the family member. It’s all about support and service.

Vacations for Caregivers

Vacation plans have been finalized for many families. Some have decided to take several short vacations during the late spring through early fall. Others have made the decision to take one long vacation for total rest and relaxation. As a caregiver, have you planned your vacation for this season? Will you take the time out with family? Would you prefer going to a new location as an adventure or to some place that is familiar? Did you decide to accept an offer from your friends? You do realize how important it is to take the time for yourself; right? It is a time for you to rejuvenate and reflect. There will be time to think about your caregiving situation. A vacation allows you to look more objectively at the caregiving scene with no distractions. Your thoughts will be more clear. You can make decisions about new strategies and techniques to enhance your caregiving journey. Remember to take some time to read, write, study and do some of those hobbies you have been postponing just because. Enjoy this time. You deserve it. This vacation can be used as a time of renewal for you. Let me hear about your vacation plans. Send some pictures of you on a real break.

Caregiver Attachments

What are you attached to as a caregiver? Are you holding on to something that is preventing you from being the person you want to be as you continue your caregiving responsibilities? Have you given any thought to why you are hanging on to or safeguarding whatever it is? Could it be fear of the unknown? Are you afraid of the change that might present itself? How about just breaking some old habits and replacing them with new ones that will allow you to release whatever the attachment is? Examine your feelings and thoughts carefully. You might surprise yourself and forfeit some of the attachments. Remember, caregivers need care too. Call me and share your story.
