Vacations for Caregivers

Vacation plans have been finalized for many families. Some have decided to take several short vacations during the late spring through early fall. Others have made the decision to take one long vacation for total rest and relaxation. As a caregiver, have you planned your vacation for this season? Will you take the time out with family? Would you prefer going to a new location as an adventure or to some place that is familiar? Did you decide to accept an offer from your friends? You do realize how important it is to take the time for yourself; right? It is a time for you to rejuvenate and reflect. There will be time to think about your caregiving situation. A vacation allows you to look more objectively at the caregiving scene with no distractions. Your thoughts will be more clear. You can make decisions about new strategies and techniques to enhance your caregiving journey. Remember to take some time to read, write, study and do some of those hobbies you have been postponing just because. Enjoy this time. You deserve it. This vacation can be used as a time of renewal for you. Let me hear about your vacation plans. Send some pictures of you on a real break.

Caregiver Attachments

What are you attached to as a caregiver? Are you holding on to something that is preventing you from being the person you want to be as you continue your caregiving responsibilities? Have you given any thought to why you are hanging on to or safeguarding whatever it is? Could it be fear of the unknown? Are you afraid of the change that might present itself? How about just breaking some old habits and replacing them with new ones that will allow you to release whatever the attachment is? Examine your feelings and thoughts carefully. You might surprise yourself and forfeit some of the attachments. Remember, caregivers need care too. Call me and share your story.

Eating Habits of Caregivers

Have you noticed a change in your weight that may correspond to the increase in your caregiving responsibilities? Are you eating balanced meals? Several fruits and vegetable portions throughout the day? Have you lost your appetite? Are you a nibbler or a grazer? Are you a late night eater? Are you eating processed or prepared meals? Often caregivers are not taking the time to prepare well and nutritionally balanced meals for themselves. This can lead to weight loss or even weight gain. More importantly, it can also lead to more stress in your life. I would love to hear and have you share some of your recipes with me. Remember, caregivers need care too.

Cashing in For Caregivers

Cashing in — no not financially. Cashing in on favors from family members, friends, support groups and organizations can be rewarding for caregivers. Remember when someone asked you to let them know if there is something they can do to help out with a loved one? Now is the time to allow those who want to help you with the caregiving responsibilities. Caregivers trying to do everything themselves soon burnout physically and emotionally. The caregiver suffers as does the loved one. Allowing someone to do some of your weekly chores, run errands, do some of the marketing or even sit with your loved one for a few hours will ease your load. It is like a cash incentive. What can you do to cash in? Let me know.
