In December, the discussion was Handling Grief during the holidays. If you wish, we can work together to start your personal group. Each group consists of 6-10 caring and conscientious people. Everyone gets to share the spotlight. The groups meet for 75 minutes of self -discovery, restoration and self-care. It’s hard to believe it’s August already.  My how time flies. It has been a busy summer.  Trust you are getting in some relaxation, some” time outs” and managing your time of self care more effectively.

If your summer activities have been limited, take the time to participate and engage in something that is fun for you and simple to do.  Some ideas are summer concerts.  Many parks anphoto (11)d beaches have free concerts and free movies.  Grab a blanket, some of the wonderful fruits and vegetables that are readily available during the summer months, share with some friends and family and enjoy. My Aging Gracefully presentation was a real hit with the community.  The discussion went from being “fabulous at 50 to being a novel 90.  How are you Aging Gracefully?

Summer Breeze

We are officially in the midst of summer with barbecues — try grilling some vegetables and fruit. The beach is calling. Watch or participate in a game of volley ball. Many outdoor concerts are free. Lighter cooking frees up our time and looks good on our bodies. Allow summer breeze to bring more joy to and for you.
We have also passed the mid-mark for this year. What happened? Are our goals and intentions being fulfilled or are they near that half way point? Let’s re-focus and make specific and clear action toward attaining what our hearts desire.
Take the time to enjoy some of the breezes of summer. Get out and appreciate nature. Watch the butterflies as they flutter about. Observe the birds watching you as they decide where to land for a sweet taste of summer.
Go out to a Farmers Market and indulge of the freshness of summer fruit and vegetables. Taste the delicacies of colors — purples, reds, greens and yellows. (tomatoes, grapes, squash, zucchini, peaches, apricots and more.  When is the last time you bought yourself a snow cone or even a scoop of real ice cream.  It goes with the breezes of summer.
Call friends. Do something adventurous. Rent and ride a bike. Take a new class — something that relaxes you or reinvigorates you. Read an exciting novel. Write a love letter to yourself. Mail it and enjoy the splendor that is you as you enthusiastically read it.
Gather fresh flowers from your yard or from the neighbors. You are worthy.
You are deserving. Summer is the perfect time to add more beauty, more self care

and more value to your life.

Does Caregiving Matter

I just completed three radio blog interviews with Spotlite Radio.  The topics are very familiar to the caregiver families. The first week, I shared information on stress reduction. We all have stress in our lives.  How we choose to handle it makes a world of difference to everyone we encounter.

reduce stress

As caregivers, we are so busy, a chaotic life that is filled with stress becomes normal.  Someone can ask us “what we do to relax, or how we relax” and we have to think of an answer.  Let’s commit to taking some time for ourselves when we get to just “be” not to “do” or “have”.   This is a time when we just relax and unwind knowing that all is well and this is our time to not think about what is next.  Just imagine the peace of mind, the restfulness this brings to our inner spirit body.

The second interview discussed “moving in”.  This dialogue focused on the pros and cons of moving in with our parents or having them move in with us.  The top reasons for making this move was the desire to allow loved ones to live with family and not be placed into nursing facilities.  Finances and resources were other considerations for moving in. The consequences of moving in were not overlooked.  Communication can avoid some of the stress and overwhelm of moving into the home as we leave familiar surroundings and friends. Everyone wants to be assured there is adequate privacy.

Our third and final conversation focused on “self-care”.  This applies not only to caregivers, but to anyone who is not taking the time to take care of themselves.  It’s like  applying the  mask on airplanes.  Put yours on first.  Then you will be able to help the other person with theirs.   Another comparison used was the “empty glass”.  If your glass is empty, how do you fill someone else’s?

I will be posting the interviews and links in the next few days.  Listen and let me know what you think. Share some of your caregiving stories.

As we head into summer, many are making plans for vacations.  As a caregiver, what matters most to you?  Be sure to take some time for yourself.  Go to the park.  Visit a museum.   Take in a summer concert.  Get a well-deserved massage, manicure or pedicure for those summer sandals. Read some passages from The ABC’s for Caregivers.
